Recently several schemes have been proposed to create a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the Rashba type for ultracold atoms by inducing optical transitions between a number of atomic levels [1, 2]. This leads to a number of distinct phenomena, such as formation of non6conventional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) for ultracold atoms a_ected by the SOC. Here we propose to use a bilayer scheme involving only two atomic internal states [3] to realize the Rashba-type SOC for atomic BEC, and explore ground state phases of such a bilayer BEC [4].
